The Very Intelligent Homosexual, Tony Kushner

Yesterday my parents, Joe, and I went to see the last night of The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures at the Public. The play challenged and provoked us, and like any Tony Kushner play, the audience was responsible for putting in the work required to understand the story. Tony Kushner never talks down to his audience, even when we could use the help. After the standing ovation, the audience began moving toward the exits when I spotted Tony Kushner, embracing the Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis. Everyone who was still in the theater broke into applause for Kushner and I was moved to tears to be in the company of such a genius. When asked to give an impromptu speech, Kushner said, “Go home,” and with that, we let him off the hook. I know it goes without saying, but here goes: New York is an amazing place to be.
