Progress in the media

Just when my despair was setting in, it seems that The Times might be listening to its (queer and queer-friendly) readers:

To the Editor:

Benoit Denizet-Lewis’s Sept. 4 review of Tango: My Childhood, Backwards and in High Heels showed a lack of consideration for the author, Justin Vivian Bond, and for all who use gender-neutral pronouns. Denizet-Lewis noted that Bond prefers the pronoun “V,” but consistently referred to V as “he.” Refusing to recognize Bond’s chosen identity contributes to the marginalization of transgender people.

Although we understand that many readers may be new to the concept of gender-neutral pronouns, it is essential that The Times respect the gender identities and preferred pronouns of all who grace its pages.
