Keeping busy (bees)

Winter is a perfect time to begin a new hobby, and though it may end up being more of a passing phase than a real pursuit, I’ve decided that I’d like to learn to keep bees. Until recently, beekeeping was illegal in New York, but now that people can harvest honey openly, everyone seems to be doing it. There are many advantages to eating locally produced honey, and my own household consumes quite a bit of the sweet stuff, so making our own supply seems like a good move. Plus, local honey seems to sell for a pretty penny. All of the information that I’ve read about harvesting bees in Brooklyn suggests that I begin by taking a class, and classes are plentiful in the winter to prepare new keepers for setting up their hives in the spring, but the schedule conflicts with my due date or thereabouts. Ideally, I can find a class in mid-December, while I’m still baby-free.
