No animals in the parade today, Zevi.

Always learning as a new parent, today I realized that I’m going to have to be very careful about making promises when Zevi is old enough to understand what I’m saying. The most exciting thing about the Three Kings Parade in our neighborhood is the strange animals that suddenly appear decked out in fancy costumes to march down Graham Avenue. Two years ago, Joseph, Nukah, and I stumbled upon this same parade and I believe it was the first and only time our dog came face-to-face (sort of) with a camel, a goat, and sheep.

I couldn’t wait for Zevi to get to see the animals, too. But when we arrived at the parade, right before it started, rumors were flying that the animals had gotten lost. We never found out what happened to the animals, but there were none in this year’s parade. The lesson: don’t promise my child that she’ll get to see lots of cool animals in her neighborhood unless I see them right in front of me. I’m sure there will be times when I make mistakes and get Zevi’s hopes up, but today, I was reminded of how uncertain the future truly is.

The parade was still a big hit with all the babies. Unsuspecting Zevi was thrilled with all the fun and Joseph and I loved the small-town feeling that this parade gives us.
